Course content

The course covers how protein and lipid molecules constitute?membranes, and how these function in cells and organelles in cooperation with the cellular cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix in tissues and organisms. The course also covers mechanisms for how newly made proteins are sorted and transported to the correct destination in cells and tissues. Fundamental principles in cellular biology are used to explain signal transfer and immunological mechanisms.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • explain how cellular membranes are built and function, how membrane transport functions in eukaryotic cells, how molecules pass through membranes, and the physiological importance of these mechanisms.
  • explain how proteins are made, modified, sorted and transported to different membrane destinations and organelles in the cell,?based on information in the protein?structure.
  • understand how cells send and receive signals and understand how these mechanisms are?important for regulation of?cell division, cell death, and the immune system.
  • discuss the evolutionary origin of eukaryotic cells and their organelles and how cell adhesion and adhesion to the extracellular matrix shapes? tissues and organisms.
  • read original and review articles on?cell?biology topics, and in a group present important parts of the subject?in a suitable form to fellow students.
  • analyse and assess immunological tests in the laboratory.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for?in Studentweb.

Priority will be given to students in the bachelor program in Biosciences.

Special admission requirements

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2)

And in addition one of these:

  • Mathematics R2
  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

Mathematics R2 was a requirement up until and including the study year 2021/2022, as part of a trial arrangement. From and including the study year 2022/2023, Mathematics R2 is no longer a requirement.

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Formal prerequisite knowledge

The course HMS0503 – Laboratory Safety must be passed before attending the lab sessions.

BIOS1110 – Celle- og molekyl?rbiologi, BIOS1130 – Biokjemi 1, and BIOS1120 – Fysiologi
