Course content

The main aim of the course is to teach the principles of isotope systems and their use in dating rocks and tracing geological processes.

Learning outcome

During the course you will:

  • Learn the basics of isotope systematics and radioactive decay.
  • Get insights in nucleosynthesis, extinct radionuclides and early processes in the solar system.
  • Learn the principles and applications of radiogenic isotope systematics to study geological processes and date rock-forming events.
  • Understand the main features of low-temperature geochronology.
  • Get acquainted with the principles and applications of stable isotope systematics.

Admission

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

GEO4830 – Analytical methods in geochemistry (discontinued), the courses can be followed in parallel

Overlapping courses

10 credits overlap with GEO4820 – Isotope geology (discontinued)

Teaching

Lectures (6 hours / week for 10 weeks). Compulsory participation to exercises. A project report has to be presented in the class.

Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet, are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Studies administration, email address: studieinfo@geo.uio.no

Examination

A project report which is to be presented and final oral examination.

Oral examination if 5 or less students, written examination if more than 6 students.

Language of examination

Exam questions or assignment questions are in English., and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
