Course content

An introduction to cartography, remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS). Emphasis is put on practical exercises regarding e.g. airphotos, geomorphologic, geologic, and resources mapping.

Learning outcome

You will learn the fundamental concepts of cartography and coordinate systems as a basis for treatment of geographic information. You will be able to process digital geographic data and perform simple analyses. You also get an introduction to remote sensing techniques for resources mapping. The course gives you a foundation for interpreting geologic and geomorphologic maps.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Overlapping courses

Teaching

A mixture of lectures and exercises on PC. 2 mandatory assignments.

Examination

1 written project report (counts ca 20%). Final written examination (counts ca 80%). Letter grades (A-F).

This course offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination.
