Course content
The global energy balance, transport of energy in the atmosphere and ocean, the greenhouse effect. Solar radiation, thermal infrared radiation, the role of gases and clouds. The energy balance of the surface, the hydrologic cycle. Atmospheric motions and ocean currents, the El Ni?o phenomenon.
Learning outcome
To provide a basic understanding of the physical processes influencing the Earth’s climate.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
- Physics (1+2)
- Chemistry (1+2)
- Biology (1+2)
- Information technology (1+2)
- Geosciences (1+2)
- Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).
Recommended previous knowledge
A background corresponding to the courses MAT1100 – Calculus and MEK1100 – Vector Calculus is recommended.
Overlapping courses
10 credits overlap with GEF1100 – The Climate System (discontinued)
2 credits overlap with the previous GF 121, and 5 credits overlap with the previous GF 326.
Teaching
Lectures, 3 hours per week. Excursion. Colloquia/exercises, 2 hours per week. 2 obligatory written exignments which must be approved before you can sit for the final exam.

Examination
A written midterm exam which counts ca 1/3 in the final grade. A final written exam (3 hours) which counts ca 2/3 in the final grade. Letter grades (A-F).
This course offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination.
