GEO9530 – Airborne Surveying and Geodesy

Course content

The course builds upon the introduction of surveying, photogrammetry, and other types of airborne acquisition done in GEO3460/4460. The main learning objective is that students can plan, and, with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), perform, an airborne survey, complete with the appropriate choice of sensor, georeferencing, ground truthing, and quality metrics.

The course includes several practicals and associated mandatory hand-ins. The star assignment will be a field survey planned by the students, individually or in pairs, deciding on a technical question to answer using the tools and methods discussed in class. Students may decide to investigate the precision of LiDAR vs Photogrammetry, the impact on georeferencing sources, the validity of various acquisition strategies for a given objective and so on.

Learning outcome

After taking the course, you will be able to

  • operate UAVs and follow the related regulations

  • use GNSS systems and understand the theory behind their functions

  • navigate around coordinate systems, datums, and projections

  • use photogrammetry as a surveying tool

  • use LiDAR as a surveying tool

  • decide what acquisition tool and method is most suited to a given use-case or research question

  • exploit advanced post-processing methods

Admission to the course

Teaching

There are up to four hours of lectures and practicals per week. Some practicals will form the basis for four written mandatory reports, which must be approved before the final exam. One or more days of practical work will be conducted outdoors, where students will lead UAV-based data acquisitions.

The planning, execution, and processing of the data will contribute to a report investigating a specific topic of interest for each individual student that counts towards the final grade.

Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Student?administration (studieinfo@geo.uio.no).

We reserve the right to change the teaching?form and examination of the course in semesters where 5 or fewer students have been admitted.

Examination

  • Four written reports must be approved in order to sit the final exam.
  • The report investigating a particular topic of interest counts 40% towards the final grade.
  • A final oral examination counts 60% towards the final grade.
  • All parts must be passed separately in order to pass the course.?

When writing your exercises make sure to familiarize yourself with the?rules for use of sources and citations.?Breach of these rules may lead to suspicion of?attempted cheating.

Mandatory assignments are valid for 5 semesters starting from the semester they were approved the first time.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you?withdraw from the exam?after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are?offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass, the original examination.
