FYS4540 – Energy physics- solar energy

Course content

Energy needs, energy consumption and energy conservation from a physics perspective. Solar energy; energy density, availability, time and angle dependency, spectral characteristics. Methods used for solar energy exploitation, including absorption and emission of electromagnetic radiation from different materials, as well as technical design and construction of devices for solar energy exploitation. Methods and equipment for measurement and evaluation of energy systems.

Learning outcome

The course will give an understanding of basic principles of energy consumption and energy conservation, from both a physical and a social perspective. It will give skills and understanding about how solar energy can be exploited, with emphasis on the physical processes and limitations/possibilities. In particular, emphasis will be placed on the experimental aspect and technical measurement aspects of the characterization and evaluation of solar energy as well as various other types of energy systems.

Teaching

Approx. 35 hours of lectures in the autumn semester, if possible arranged as intensive teaching. As a part of the course, there is a compulsory practical measurement task, which is carried out at the SOLLAB in the Department, or at another suitable plant/laboratory.

Examination

Final oral exam.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
