FYS9180 – Condensed Matter Field Theory

Course content

Path integrals, Quantum phase transitions, Fermions in various dimensions, Luttinger liquids, The renormalization group, Response functions, Quantum Hall effect, Topological terms.

Learning outcome

The students should be able to understand research articles and to carry out calculations relevant for condensed matter systems using field theoretical techniques including non-perturbative methods. They should also get a conceptual overview of various phenomena within the renormalization group framework and be able to apply this as a calculational tool. Furthermore, the students should get an understanding of how different experimental probes relate to correlation functions/response functions that can be calculated.

FYS4430 – Condensed Matter Physics II, FYS4110 – Modern Quantum Mechanics or similar courses.
