Plans for week 43, October 20-24
Dear all, first, a great thank you to everybody for heroic efforts with the first midterm. It has been a pleasure to read through them. Feedback is planned for the end of next week. Let me also now if it is ok if we schedule the second midterm for the first half of november, that is sometime during the week which starts with November 10, with a tentative deadline around November 17 (Monday) or 18 (or later that week). That way we avoid overlapping with the second project in FYS-STK and potential exams in other courses (some start around November 25). Each midterm counts 30% of the final grade.
Our last lecture with summary etc is planned to be November 28. We should also start planning the final oral exam (which counts 40% of the final grade). Since we are quite many, we will need two full days (45 mins per candidate). I know that FYS4170 has a scheduled exam on Dec 19. We could then opt for December 15 and 16, with the 15th reserved for those of you who follow FYS4170. Let med know if this fits and if there are problems.
I am flexible with days the week of Dec 15-19. Earlier days may conflict with other exams. Keep in mind also that in case you have already booked your travel home, we can always organize the final oral exam via zoom.
Else, this week, we will wrap up our discussion of DFT and start with many-body perturbation theory on Friday. Since the DFT lectures are more meant as a final part of mean-field theory (and to avoid overlaps with FYS-MENA4110), there are no exercises this week (you deserve a small break after all struggles with the midterm). The plan this week is thus to

a. Kohn-Sham equations and the local density approximation and links with Hartree-Fock theory
b. Start many-body perturbation theory
c. Linking FCI and Hartree-Fock theory with many-body perturbation theory
No exercises this week!
Best wishes to you all,
