Course content
The course describes basic electrical and magnetic phenomena, as well as laws for electrical circuits, both at direct current and alternating current. The course gives a thorough introduction to Maxwell?s equations, and how to use them to derive the characteristics of electromagnetic waves.
Learning outcome
After having completed the course:
- you have extensive knowledge of electrical and magnetic fields, sources of fields, Maxwell equations in integral and differential form, and you can calculate such fields using analytical and numerical methods.
- you can account for electrical and magnetic forces, as well as energy stored in electrical and magnetic fields.
- you know basic phenomena in electricity and magnetism and can account for a range of technological solutions that many use daily.
- you can analyze a linear electric circuit and calculate currents and voltage differences in different parts of the circuit, both for DC and AC.
- you have knowledge of why both traditional and numerical solution methods are important to the subject and have experience in applying both types of methods to electromagnetic issues.
- you can present a chosen topic from relevant physics to fellow students.
Admission to the course
This course is only for students admitted to the Lektorprogrammet, opptak 2009-2013 (master – 5 ?r) (being phased out) Science option in the Teacher program.
Eligible students will be registered for the course, and not register themselves in Studentweb.
Special admission requirements
In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2
And in addition one of these:
Physics (1+2)
Chemistry (1+2)
Biology (1+2)
Information technology (1+2)
Geosciences (1+2)
Technology and theories of research (1+2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by?equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies?(in Norwegian).

Teaching
FYS1120L follows the lectures of FYS1120 – Electromagnetism.
The first lecture is mandatory. If you are unable to attend, the Department of Physics has to be informed no later than the same day (studieinfo@fys.uio.no), or else you will lose your place in the course.
The course extends over a full semester with 6 hours of teaching per week:?
- 2 hours of interactive lectures
- 2 hours of full class seminars
- 2 hours of full class tutorials with numerical and theoretical assignments
The course includes the following mandatory exercises that?must be approved before you?can?sit the final exam:
- Approved completion of a minimum of 30 learning activities, consisting of: Submission of assignment and correction of a fellow student, both of which must be approved (2 points each, 20 possible); participation in seminars (2 points each, 20 possible); participation in tutorials (1 point each, 10 possible); submission of projects (10 points each, 20 possible)
- Written submission and oral presentation of Computational Essay

Examination
- Final exam part 1: 4 hours written exam which?counts 50 % towards the final grade
- Final exam part 2: 4 hours written exam which counts 50 % towards the final grade
This course has mandatory assignments that must be approved before you can sit the final?exam.
When writing your assignments make sure to familiarize yourself with the rules for use of sources and citations.?Breach of these rules may lead to suspicion of attempted cheating.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: FYS1120 – Electromagnetism
