Course content

This course is an introduction to general public international law of which human rights law is a part. The course traces international legal history from its origins to the present state of the law while discussing the concepts, principles, and norms which are of particular relevance in international human rights law.

Learning outcome

International human rights law is a part of the more general body of international law and, as with any body of law, there are certain rules of interpretation and guiding principles rooted in history and practice. This course will provide you with a basis for understanding the protection of human rights as a part of this wider international legal regime. It will enable you to use international law as a tool for analyzing human rights questions, problems and solutions.

Admission

Admission is restricted to students on the Master of Philosophy programme in the Theory and Practice of Human Rights.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.

Lectures/seminars.

Examination

Written assignment of 3-4 pages presented orally to the class. Grades pass/fail.
