MUS4830 – Music, technology and production

Course content

The aim of the course is to develop insight and reflection on music technologies and associated fields of cultural practice, and to enable a wide application of this perspective to areas such as: production, composition, and analysis. 

Learning outcome

Having completed the course the student will:  

  • know the main features of the historical development of music technology
  • know the different scholarly perspectives and problem areas related to music and technology
  • further develop these skills in writing and verbal articulation

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

MUS2281 – Studioproduksjon (discontinued), eller tilsvarende kunnskaper.

Teaching

8 double hours of lectures and 4 double hours of group supervision.  

Examination

The exam consists of a term paper (15 pages of 2300 characters each, spaces not included). The title and topic are to be agreed between student and instructor, and the paper is to be formally presented in a preliminary version as a seminar paper at the end of the semester. The term paper is to be handed in by a specified date at the end of the semester.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
