MUS4687 – Special Readings in Musicology

Course content

A self-selected reading list consisting of approx. 1000-1200 pages on a musicological subject. The subject may be music history, music pedagogy, popular music, ethnomusicology, music psychology, music theory, music technology or another musicological field. The course is only available on the recommendation of your supervisor.

Proposals for the problem and syllabus list must be developed as part of the application for the course and must be the starting point for further guidance.

Learning outcome

Students have the opportunity for in-depth study of the chosen subject, and to develop their skills in academic inquiry and independent work. The course is also an exercise in writing and argumentation.

Admission to the course

The course is only available on the recommendation of your supervisor. To sign up, contact the department at studieinfo@imv.uio.no and attach the confirmation from your supervisor.

Requires admission to the master's programme in Musicology or Music, Communication and Technology.

Teaching

  • Up to four 60-minute sessions of individual supervision.

Examination

  • A 15-page term paper (2300 characters per page, spaces not included) is submitted within the given deadline at the end of the semester.

The paper must be an independent inquiry within the chosen field. The reading list and the paper’s title must be approved by the supervisor in advance.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
