MUS4216 – Methodological Topic: History and Analysis

Course content
The course covers most of the historical and aesthetic dimensions of musicology. In addition, it will be taught in note-based and performance-oriented musical analysis within all genres. The course is divided into the following main areas:
- Historiography
- Music analysis (western classical music, pop and jazz music)
- Performativity and sound
- Hermeneutics / interpretation theory
- Aesthetics
Learning outcome
On successful completion of the course, the students will have:
- developed an understanding of (cultural) historical connections that surround musical practices and scholarship
- become aware of the importance of developing historiographical and analytical tools in relation to the sounding music and its cultures
- gained theoretical and interpretative frameworks to reflect on the character and substance of music and musical experiences.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the master's programme in musicology at the University of Oslo
Teaching
8 double lessons lectures on the topics:
- Music analysis - 4 double lessons
- Source criticism - 1 double lesson
- Hermeneutics / Interpretation theory - 1 double lesson
- Historiography - 2 double hours
12 seminar hours.
One obligatory seminar presentation and four qualification assignements must be approved by the course tutor in order for a student to take the final exam. One assignment shall be written in each of the following four fields: music analysis (art music); music analysis (popular music); historiography; hermeneutics and / or source criticism.
Examination
Final term paper (15 pages, each containing approx. 2.300 characters, spaces not included) to be handed in by a specified deadline at the end of the semester.
