MUS2133 ¨C Music Psychology

Course content

This is a broadly based course focusing on musical experiences in different contexts, containing elements of music perception, music and emotions, music and motion, as well as music in different social contexts. The course will give the students an overview of relevant research within these fields.

Learning outcome

On successful completion of the course, you will:

• have an overview of musical perception.
• be familiar with the way in which elements of music theory such as the perception of timbre and pitch, rhythm, texture, tonality, modality, and harmony are based in music psychology.
• be familiar with the way in which the interplay between sound, motion and visual perception contributes to musical experiences.
• be familiar with the connection between music, motion, and emotion.

Admission to the course

Overlapping courses

• 10 credits overlap with MUS4320 ¨C Music Psychology (discontinued).

Teaching

• 10 double hours lectures and seminars

Compulsory activities:

• Group research project
• Seminar presentation

Information about the assignments and the deadlines will be given during the teaching and in Canvas. You have to hand in the assignments within the deadlines, and you are responsible for familiarising yourself with the requirements for the compulsory activities.

The compulsory activity is only valid within the current semester. All compulsory activities must be approved in order for you to sit the exam. You are responsible for keeping track of any absences, and for checking that you have everything approved

This is how you apply for a valid absence from compulsory activity/compulsory attendance.

Examination

• Term paper (5 pages, each containing approx. 2,300 characters, spaces not included). Title and topic are to be agreed between each student and the instructor.

You have to fulfill the requirements of the compulsory activities to sit the exam.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
