MUS2005 – Music cognition
Course content
Included in the course’s main objectives is:
- What is cognition? What is music cognition?
- Musical experience from a phenomenological perspective
- Musical experience from a neuropsychological perspective
- Music and sensory integration (cross-modality, motor theory, metaphor theory, emotions)
- Gestalt theory
- Auditory Scene Analysis
- Timbre, a multidimensional phenomenon
Learning outcome
The course will provide an insight into the cognitive processes that form the basis of musical experience, performance and composition, at the same time offering an understanding of the central problems and methodological challenges within the field of music cognition.

Formal prerequisite knowledge
No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.Teaching
The lectures and seminars are jointly attended by students taking MUS2005 og MUS4005. There are 8 double hourly lectures and 8 hours of obligatory seminars. An obligatory seminar presentation should be approved by the course tutors prior to the exam.
Examination
An assignment of 10 pages (2300 characters, not including spacing) should be delivered within a given deadline at the end of the semester. This should represent an independent account of issues pertaining to the field of music cognition. The title and topic is chosen by the student in consultation with the course tutor(s).
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
