Course content

A practical introduction of various pop/rock related musical styles from the 60s to today, where the use of MIDI/audio-sequencing is the main focus of attention. There will also be an opportunity for recording in the studio. The course will consist of a historical coverage of various genres and an overview of genre-related techniques and supervision of their practical application.

Learning outcome

The course provides an insight into a range of selected pop/rock related musical styles, together with the furnishing of practical skills in practical work connected to these. In addition you will have the possibility to develop your capability within MIDI/audio sequencing and your knowledge of production techniques.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

MUS1230 – Musikkteori 1B (discontinued) (Music Theory 1B) or equivalent competence in the use of MIDI/audio sequencing, together with admission granted to the programme in musicology or to another programme which includes/incorporates the 80-credit group from the programme in musicology.

Recommended previous knowledge

Knowledge equivalent to the MIDI part of MUS1220 – Musikkteori 1A (discontinued) (Music Theory 1A). General experience in the use of MIDI/audio sequencing and analogue/digital recording techniques will be useful

Overlapping courses

The course overlaps with the MIDI part of MUS1250 (Music Theory 2).

Teaching

The course runs through the entire semester and consists of 12 hourly lectures and 12 hours of group instruction where assignments will be played through together with relevant musical examples.

Examination

Students will be required to submit a portfolio of four assignments, which will be evaluated either as pass or fail. In order to pass, at least 80% class attendance is mandatory in addition to meeting the deadline of all assignments.
