MCT4010 – Research Methods, Tools and Issues in MCT
Course description
Course content
The aim of the course is to develop knowledge of and skills in various research methods, tools and issues in the field of music, communication and technology. These range from qualitative to quantitative methods, and from artistic to scientific perspectives, and will prepare the student for carrying out research and development in the field.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
Having completed the course the student will:
- be familiar with various types of methods used in the field of music, communication and technology, from artistic to scientific research.
- be familiar with a range of different music technologies, their histories, aesthetic qualities and societal impacts.
Skills
Having completed the course the student will:
- be able to read and reflect on new research results in the field.
- be able to identify and resolve ethical problems in research, including working with external stakeholders.
- be able to present and discuss research both orally and in writing.
Admission

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the master's programme Music, Communication and Technology.
Teaching
The course is taught using a flipped-classroom model:
- a set of video lectures, reading assignments and online qualification tests.
- weekly seminars during which core research questions are presented, discussed and critically reflected upon.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
The course will be assessed by a 3-days take-home examination. Read and review a short research paper, summarize and criticize content.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
