MEVIT4550 – Nordic Noir

Course content
“Nordic noir” has - especially in the English-speaking world - become a term referring to contemporary crime fiction – books, television serials and feature films from the Nordic countries. The international appeal of authors like Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesb? and TV serials like "The Killing" and "The Bridge" has resulted in a major popular cultural export that is historically unprecedented with regards to popular fiction from the Nordic countries.
The course “Nordic noir” will study different aspects of the phenomenon including the international discourse discussing and analyzing the books, films and TV serials that have been given the Nordic noir label. An emphasis will be on study and analyze what is considered to be the constitutive characteristics of the genre, on the reception of Nordic noir, and on the possible changes in the perception of the Nordic region, contributed by the event of Nordic crime in different popular cultural expressions.

Teaching
This course has a qualification assignment, graded to approved/ not approved. The qualification assignment must be approved in order to take the exam.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Term paper consisting of up to 10 pages (where each page has about 2300 characters whithout space).
A qualification assignment must be approved before the exam.
Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
A term paper or equivalent that is passed may not be resubmitted in revised form.
If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
