MEVIT3550 – Nordic Noir

Course content
“Nordic noir” has, especially in the English-speaking world, become a term referring to contemporary crime fiction: books, television serials and feature films from the Nordic countries.
The international appeal of authors like Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesb? and TV serials like the Killings and The Bridge has resulted in a major popular cultural export that is historically unprecedented with regards to popular fiction from the Nordic countries.
The course “Nordic noir” will study different aspects of the phenomenon including the international discourse discussing and analyzing the books, films and TV serials that have been given the Nordic noir label. An emphasis will be on study and analyze what is considered to be the constitutive characteristics of the genre, on the reception of Nordic noir and on the possible changes in the perception of the Nordic region contributed by the event of Nordic crime in different popular cultural expressions.

Teaching
Students have a qualification assignment, graded approved/ not approved.
Examination
Three day take home exam.
A qualification assignment must be approved before the exam.

Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
