Course description:
This
course consists of two main parts. Firstly, it provides academic methodology
for developing research skills and methods for textual study in preparation for
the master level and a master thesis. Secondly, it surveys background knowledge
and the state of the arts in the domain of linguistics, the history of
?Humanism? and ?Renaissance?, and the politics of language. The varied
disciplines of linguistics and the spectrum of related fields will be
introduced.
The
emphasis is on Spanish-European language study in the framework of Spanish
cultural history, as well as expansionism and colonial politics. This course
explores the role of prominent Renaissance scholars and imperialists in setting
a trend for the development of modern society, sciences, politics, and
globalization.
This
course will be taught in English with some presentations and summaries in
Spanish. Since the themes of Spanish linguistics will be taught from an
interdisciplinary perspective, students from all faculties and disciplines are
welcome. There are no specific course-related pre-requisits
for taking this course.
Coursework/Exams:
1. Final
exam: Students who require credits for this course will prepare a fifteen-minutes interview based on the preparation of some
research questions or topics of their choice, based on extracts and
interpretation of one to two books and/or two to three articles (See enclosed a
list of literature to choose from). Potential topics for the interview will be
discussed with me beforehand, and can be related to your Master thesis,
research directions and interests, and perhaps to conference or colloquium
presentations. The topics for this interview as well as literature will be
discussed at the very beginning of the course, so that you can begin to prepare
for it early.
2. You
will prepare one short presentation on a topic of your choice within the
framework of this course, and will submit a three page outline and summary of
your presentation with a short bibliography (at least eight titles) seven days before
the presentation is due.
3. The
course-outline for each session will be available in copies at my office door, Romansk institut, 3 Floor, Room
D-17.
