Bruk gjerne Remingtons (2004:5) definisjon: "By democracy we mean a political system in which the citizens invest leaders with political power through free and fair elections and in turn hold leaders accountable for their use of political power. Democracy requires not only that all adult citizens have the right to participate in competitive, fair elections, but also that other political rights, such as freedom of association, conscience, and media, are honoured as well so that society can participate meaningfully in political life."
