NORAM4512 – The American Presidency
Course description
Course content
This master’s seminar engages students in an in-depth study of the constitutional basis, customary practices and contemp-orary status of the American chief executive. Analysis will focus on the currently most relevant dimensions of the chief executive’s many crucial roles in U.S. and world affairs. The course will, however, also investigate the historical evolution of the partisan, electoral, administrative, legislative, national security, and international dimensions of the office, as well as the legacies of its most influential incumbents.
Learning outcome
After completing this course you will have:
- aquired an understanding of the presidency and its impact, primarily through the sources, methods and models of political science and historical study.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Students must be accepted at the master’s level of study to take the course.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is open to MA students with an appropriate level of oral, reading and writing skills in English for advanced study.
Teaching
Seminar, 2 hours per week for 14 weeks, 28 hours in all.
Attendance at least 80% of the class hours is obligatory. Additional absences must be justified (please contact the exam coordinator).
Students must give an oral presentation and turn in an essay of 5 standard pages (11,500 bytes) by the stated deadlines in the semester. These projects must be approved by the instructor. Students have to fulfil all the requirements in order to sit the exam.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Final marks are awarded on the basis of a 4-hour written examination, which is graded from A to E (passing) and F (fail).

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current and the next two semesters that the course is taught.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
