NORAM4511 – Research Seminar in International Migration and Ethnicity Studies
Course description
Course content
Some books and articles change a field. They alter the way we think, how our questions are framed, the very language and kinds of evidence that we use in efforts to find solutions to puzzles in an area of study. Emphasizing recent or contem-porary scholarship, this seminar course focuses on the discussion and close analysis of a few such works in the field of American Immigration and Ethnic History.
Learning outcome
After completing this course you will have:
- acquired a good general knowledge of trends and seminal works in the field of American immigration and ethnic history
- learned to identify and evaluate what it is that has shifted the focus of debate, provided new concepts or methods or opened up new sources of evidence.
- acquired a sound grounding in the evolving historiography of the field and practice in choosing topics and planning a project for their own MA research.

Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
Good oral, reading and writing skills in English are expected. NORAM1501 – Immigration and Ethnicity in American Life (discontinued), NORAM2577 – An Enlightening Lens: American History through the Prism of the Immigrant Experience (discontinued), NORAM4577 – An Enlightening Lens: American History through the Prism of the Immigrant Experience (discontinued), and other BA and 2000-4000 level courses involving international migration and ethnicity in history, anthropology and geography are appropriate preparation for this master’s seminar.
Teaching
Seminar, two hours per week for 14 weeks, 28 hours in all.
Attendance is obligatory at least 11 out of 14 seminars. Additional absences must be justified by documentation given to the exam coordinator.
Students must give an oral presentation and turn in an essay of 5 standard pages (2000 words) by the stated deadlines in the semester. These projects must be approved by the instructor. Students have to fulfil all the requirements in order to sit the exam.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Final marks are awarded on the basis of a 4-hour written examination.
