Course content
Globalization is both an economic and political phenomena and an idea that generates many contradictory visions, hopes and fears. Globalization is also an extremely contentious concept in the social sciences. This course is an introduction to the globalization debate as well as an examination of its effect on the economics, politics and society of the USA.
Learning outcome
To develop critical and analytical skills in relation to fundamental concepts in the social sciences. To learn how theoretical concepts can be used at approach the reading of content-oriented materials. To gain an overview of cutting-edge debates that underlies many contemporary developments in humanistic and social disciplines.
Admission

Minimum 3, maximum 15 students.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the master program in North American area studies, LAP or other relevant master programs. Admission to the course is required.
Teaching
The course will consist of a weekly double period of seminar teaching throughout the semester, 20 hours in all. In the middle of the semester, there will be a teaching-free period (one week in the fall, two weeks in the spring) that are meant to be used for individual study and essay-writing. 80% attendance is required.
Examination
Oral presentations, which have to be approved by course teacher for the student to be allowed to take the exam. Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current and the two consecutive semesters when the course is given. The evaluation is based on a term paper (10 standard pages) derived from course issues and readings.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
The results will be found on the StudentWeb within three weeks after the exam.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
