ENG4590 – Master's Thesis in American studies

Course content

The Master`s thesis is an independent research project of about 80-100 pages (ca. 2300 characters pr. page) based on your thesis proposal that you write in ENG4000 – Thesis Writing for English Literature, American and British Studies or ENG4510 – Thesis Writing for American and British Studies.

Learning outcome

After completing ENG4590, you:

  • know how to plan and complete an extensive research project.
  • know how to gather and critically synthesize a substantial amount of information in a structured way on your selected topic.
  • have specialized insight into an individually chosen and clearly defined topic related to American culture and society.
  • are able to engage analytically with existing theories, methods and interpretations in American studies, and work independently on analysing relevant theories, methods, arguments and interpretations within the field.
  • know how to use libraries and archives to find relevant sources and know how to apply references, footnotes and bibliographies for various types of material.
  • are familiar with ethical norms for protecting sources and how to apply these norms in academic work.
  • have advanced academic writing skills.

The grade you receive on your thesis shows to what extent you have achieved these learning outcomes.

Admission to the course

Teaching

Individual supervision.

The supervision agreement must be filled out together with your supervisor and submitted in one copy to your study advisor. Note that having a supervisor is an obligatory part of the master thesis and that the supervision agreement must be approved before the thesis can be submitted.

Examination

You must submit your thesis within set deadlines. The thesis is graded by an examination commission with one internal and one external grader.

After the commission has graded your thesis, you will have an oral exam.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

A master’s thesis that is not passed may be resubmitted only once, and then within the agreed time and in revised form. A master’s thesis that is passed may not be resubmitted in revised form.
