For this course we will study four literary texts that testify to the diversity of the early novel and which in very different ways contributed to the development of the genre:
- Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe (1719)
- Samuel Richardson, Pamela (1740-41)
- Henry Fielding, Tom Jones (1749)
- Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice (1813)
Students who wish to extend the course by 5 points, will read two additional novels:
- Aphra Behn, Oroonoko (1688)
- Laurence Sterne, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (1759-67)
