ENG4341 ¨C English Renaissance Literature

Course content

This course provides an introduction to the literature of the English Renaissance, studied in a variety of historical contexts¡ªpoetic, intellectual, religious, and political.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, you:

• have a broad understanding of the most important literary trends in Renaissance England,
• can analyse the trends as connected with the ideas and socio-political development of the period,
• have critical reading and writing skills in English,
• can produce fruitful research questions and engage with scholarly debates about individual writers and/or the period as a whole,
• know how to use the most relevant research databases such as Early English Books Online (EEBO)

Admission to the course

The student must have been accepted into the master`s degree programme in literary studies or the teacher education programme (LeP).

The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English

• 10 credits overlap with ENG2301 ¨C English Renaissance Literature.

Teaching

Seminar, two hours per week for 10 weeks, 20 hours in all.

Obligatory activity:

• A written thesis statement for your term paper turned in by a stated deadline. One paragraph.
• A draft of the first few pages, presenting your argument and relating it to relevant secondary sources (material published by an academic press or journal). Minimum two pages of fluent prose. • It is obligatory to show up for a minimum of 60% of the teaching. In this course you have to attend 6 of 10 seminars. The requirement is absolute.

The allowed absence limit will cover all absences, including illness. You will not be granted valid absences with documentation, even when the absence is due to something beyond your control.

If the course has in-person teaching, and you are signed up for an in-person seminar group, you are to attend the teaching in the location found in the schedule.

If the course has digital teaching, and you are signed up for a digital seminar group, you must attend via Zoom with your camera on.

In certain circumstances, i.e. serious or chronic illness, you could apply for special needs accomodations.

All obligatory attendance and assignments are only valid the semester you attend the course.

Examination

The form of assessment is a term paper of approximately 10 pages (a standard page consists of 2,300 characters), plus references and bibliography. The term paper must follow further guidelines to be distributed in Canvas. You will be offered individual supervision and the chance to submit a longer draft of your term paper.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

You must do all obligatory activities, including attendance, in this course again if you want to qualify to re-take the exam. Admission depends on capacity.
