ENG4310 – Literary Theory in English

Course content
This course offers an overview of major trends within literary theory of the twentieth century, such as New Criticism, structuralism, deconstruction, poststructuralism, psychoanalysis, feminist theory, queer theory, Marxism, postcolonial theory, and critical race theory.
Learning outcome
After completing this course you will have:
- increased your theoretical awareness before writing your master`s
thesis by having been introduced to a selection of critical approaches and methodologies. - developed a better understanding of central developments within
literary theory in the twentieth century and up until today.

Teaching
Seminar. Taught throughout the first half of the semester with 2 hours per week, for 7 weeks, 14 hours in all.
Attendance is obligatory at least 5 out of 7 seminars. Additional absences must be justified by documentation given to the exam coordinator. Read more about guidelines relating to obligatory activities.
Examination
The assessment of the course is based on three-day take-home exam. You are required to write 3 pages minimum (1200 words)/ 6 pages (2000 words) maximum. This does not include Works Cited.

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
