ENG4105 – English in Norway
Course description
Course content
The course takes up issues connected with the use of English in Norwegian language and society: English loanwords, code-switching, English as a working language.
Learning outcome
The aim is to give students insight into what happens in the contact between English and Norwegian: the extent of English influence, types of influence, the adaptation of loanwords, the competition between loanwords and Norwegian substitute forms, attitudes to the influence from English, etc. The course will also pay attention to theoretical and methodological aspects of the study of language contact.

The minimum number of attendants for this course is 3, the maximum 10.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
The course requires at least 40 points in language topics.
Teaching
The course is taught throughout the semester with 2 hours per week for ten weeks. At the middle of the semester there is a two-week period with no teaching, which will be used for self-study and work with assignments. The students are supposed to attend the course regularly (80% attendance required)
Examination
Each student must carry out a project, to be presented orally during the course and in written form as a term paper (abt. 10 standard pages). Deadlines: a draft for the term paper is to be presented in the course of the tenth week of teaching, and the final version of the paper is to be handed in at the latest two weeks after the end of teaching. Each student is also expected to give an oral report in class on the topic for the term paper.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
