Course content
This course will cease to exist. Students with valid course requirements may sit for the exam autumn 2009, and it will be offered for the very last time spring 2010. You will be able to sit for the exam only for the last time autumn 2010
The course is an introduction to the translation of texts from Norwegian into English. The focus will be on different language dimensions, e.g. the choice of words, collocation, grammatical patterns, idiom, level of style, which must not only be correctly expressed in the target language (English), but must also correspond as closely as possible to the source text (Norwegian), in order to render adequately the total content of the Norwegian text.
Learning outcome
The aim of the course is to improve the students' proficiency in English, to raise their awareness of important differences between Norwegian and English usage, to present and discuss some central translation problems, and to improve the students' competence as translators.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the course is required.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course assumes a good proficiency in written and oral English and very good proficiency in Norwegian. The teaching is developed primarily for students with (near) native competence in Norwegian, but the course can also be taken by students with other mother tongues.
Teaching
Seminar, 2 hours each week for 11 weeks.
The students are expected to do practical exercises on a regular basis. There is a mid-term break (one week in autumn term, two weeks in spring term) during which the students are expected to prepare obligatory assignments (see below) and otherwise study on their own. The students are supposed to attend the course regularly. 80% attendance is required to pass the course.
Examination
3 written assignments must be submitted within specified deadlines during the course, and must be approved by the teacher no later than 2 weeks before the exam. Once the course requirements have been fulfilled, they remain valid for the current and the two consecutive semesters when the course is given.
The evaluation is based on a final 3-hour written exam.

Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
The results from the exam will be found on the StudentWeb within three weeks after the exam.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
