Course content
- Pronunciation: heavy emphasis on oral activities, both in production and perception.
- Grammar: basic grammar. Knowledge of language variation, idioms, logical relationships.
- Topics/vocabulary: texts related to Norwegian culture, topics of current interest in Norwegian society, study setting.

Learning outcome
Students should be able to understand simple, oral presentations on the abovementioned topics and simple, authentic texts. They should be able to talk about these topics and use Norwegian successfully in everyday situations, to take the initiative when using the language and to express their own opinions about specific topics. Their oral and written use of the language should be good enough not to hinder successful communication.
Admission
This subject is open to persons with a valid residence permit, who meet the basic entrance requirements.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Students must be eligible for matriculation (except the Norwegian language requirement) and must have passed NORINT0110BK – Betalingskurs i norsk spr?k, trinn 1 (continued) or equivalent with the grade D or better on both the oral and written exam. Persons who have attended Norwegian language classes outside the UiO have to take a placement test (at UiO).
Teaching
The course lasts one semester with 6 hours of classroom instructions each week for 14 weeks. Total: 84 hours. More and more teaching will be given in Norwegian as the course progresses. Written assignments are to be handed in every week.
Only students who are placed in a class are allowed in the class room.
NB! All Norwegian courses have obligatory attendance of 75% of the lessons.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
Written homework is corrected and evaluated by the course teacher, who also evaluates students’ participation and oral performance in class. At the end of the course, a 3 hour written test and an oral test is given. Both are rewarded with a letter grade (A-F with A as best pass and F is fail), both counts for 50% toward the final grade and they both have to be passed in order to receive a final passing grade.

Language of examination
The paper must be written in Norwegian.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
Other
