LING2100 – Semantics and Pragmatics 2
Course description
Course content
This upper secondary course is based on LING1100 – Semantikk og pragmatikk 1. The subject covers central themes in lexical semantics, sentence semantics and pragmatics. It will vary from semester to semester exactly which semantic and pragmatic topics are taken up.
Learning outcome
This is a course in formal semantics and to a lesser extent formal pragmatics. The major focus will be on developing a formal system which explains how the meaning of complex expressions can be built up compositionally from the meanings of their parts and their syntactic structure. In addition, we will also spend some time exploring topics of interest in contemporary semantic and pragmatic theory, such as distributional semantics and game-theoretic pragmatics.
By the end of the course, students should be familiar with and able to use many of the mathematical/logical tools of modern formal semantics & pragmatics, be aware of and understand some of the key ideas and empirical observations from the last 50+ years of work in these fields, and have an appreciation for some current research directions.
The final grade shows the extent to which the student has achieved the learning outcomes for the course.
