IBS4200 – Digital approaches to Ibsen Studies

Course content

This course will introduce you to selected digital approaches that are used and being developed in Ibsen Studies. The Centre for Ibsen Studies is a world-leading institution in developing digital methods for research in the Humanities. We look at a wide range of methods in the course of a semester, including text interrogation, mapping, network analysis, and using virtual reality technology in theatre research.?The topics in focus?may vary from semester to semester.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, the students are expected:

  • To have a basic understanding of the common digital methods used in Ibsen Studies and Humanities in general;
  • To be able to analyze, assess and critique others’ use of digital methods in humanities research;
  • To be able to apply the different digital methods in one’s own research projects

Overlapping courses

Teaching

This course consists of 14 units, a total of 28 hours, and an additional 8 hours of group sessions. The form of teaching combines lecture / seminar teaching, workshops, and class activities.?

Compulsory activity: students must submit three drafts of reports (15 pages in total) in Canvas corresponding to the modules in the course. They will receive feedback on all drafts.?These reports make up the final portfolio exam and can be revised until the final submission of the portfolio exam in Inspera.

The teacher must approve the compulsory activity before students can submit their final exam.

Approved compulsory activities are valid for the next two semesters.

Examination

The exam is a portfolio consisting of three reports.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.
