Course content
This is a specialized course exploring how world religions treat some of the most difficult questions concerning the legitimacy of waging war and about the legitimate means and methods of warfare.
The course is closely linked to ongoing research and students are required to read and understand a substantial amount of primary sources in English translation.
Learning outcome
Students who take this course will be able to:
- Analyse questions about the ethics of war using central concepts from the just war tradition
- Give a coherent account of the development of the just war tradition from Roman times to modern moral philosphy
- Compare the just war thinking in the Christian world with important traditions for ethical reflection in Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Registered MA-student.
The course requires good knowledge of written and oral English.
Teaching
Teaching takes place as intensive courses in parts of the semester. A detailed schedule will be published on the semester page.
Compulsory tuition activities
- submit first draft of the term paper
Detailed information on the term paper will be given at the first seminar in January and published on the semester page.
In accordance with the Faculty's guidelines, all compulsory tuition activities are prerequisites for being allowed to submit the final paper. In the event of illness, you must submit documentation showing that your illness has prevented you from participation in the activity in question. Contact the student advisor the same day as the activity is taking place. Documentation must be submitted to the student advisor within three working days.
Examination
Term paper, 8 - 10 pages.
You must complete all compulsory tuition activities in order to be allowed to submit the final paper.
Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The language of examination is English. It is generally possible to submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation
The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
