Course overview
This course explores current topics in translation studies with special attention to Persian and other Middle Eastern literatures. Critical and theoretical readings will consider questions such as the following: What political and poetic implications arise from translation? What is untranslatable and how does the notion of untranslatability appeal to certain writers and critics today? What is World Literature and how has translation made such a concept imaginable? In addition to these broad, theoretical considerations, we will take up two case studies in the poetries of ?āfi? and Furūgh Farrukhzād and their many afterlives in translation.
