MAS2601 – Scandinavian Art and Architecture in the High Middle Ages
Course description
Course content
The course treats Scandinavian pictorial arts and architecture of the period ca. 1000-1350. The main corpus of material will be church art, because of preservation conditions. The traditional arthistorical problemstillinger will be discussed: dating, relationship to contemporary European material, interpretation methods and models. Focus is placed on pictorial art and architectire as primary sources to medieval history, discussed and interpreted from the perspective of primary written sources and secondary research literature.
Learning outcome
The students are to get acquainted with monuments, types of pictorial art, interpretation possibilities, and method problems relevant for the Scandinavian and North-European art during the period in question.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
A requirement for admission is a completion of MAS1620 – Middeladerens kunst og arkeologi, or a course of a similar content.
Recommended previous knowledge
The student is recommended to have basic knowledge of medieval history, arthistory or church history, equivelent to the introduction course MAS1620.

Teaching
The course of study extends over a whole semester. The teaching will be a combination of lectures, museum visits, group-work and seminars. The structure of the course is tripartite, approx. 3 x 5 weeks. The first two weeks of each unit will comprise of lectures (2-4 hours per week), followed by two weeks of independent work and compulsory assignment writing. The students will chose one of two given semester assignments and work on the assignment is to proceed during the whole semester. In the final week of each part, the assignments are to be presented and discussed in plenary sessions.
Examination
The assessment is based on the semester assignment which is to be handed in at the end of the semester. The assignment will comprise of roughly 10 pages, of appr. 2300 keystrokes, excluding spaces, per page. The final grading is to be given in alphabetical marks. In case of illness, documented by a medical certificate, a student may apply for a deferred / new examination in the following semester.
