Course content
A methodological approach to the study of the Chinese language and Chinese literature. The course is constructed around a given theme. It encompasses the reading of original texts, secondary literature in Chinese and in other languages, as well as discussions about the methodological use of these sources. Both linguistic and literary questions will be covered but in such a way that each student will be able to decide his or her main focus area. The course will involve some more advanced texts and complex questions than MA Chinese Studies; KIN4012 - Language/Literature 1
Learning outcome
The student will acquire advanced reading skills so as to be able to read and use Chinese primary sources in the study of Chinese language and Chinese literature. The student will also be given advanced training in critical use of relevant secondary sources both in Chinese and in other languages as well as the use of relevant reference literature. In addition the choice of theme in the two parts of the course will acquaint the student especially well with certain aspects of the Chinese language and Chinese literature. Further, the student will also practice preparing project descriptions and dealing with academic questions in written form.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
An 80-group in Chinese language at BA level with a grade of at least C in Chinese 3+4 (KIN2110), alternatively Chinese major subject with a mark of at least 2.7. Students from other educational institutions may apply provided that they have attained a BA degree or equivalent with the main weight on Chinese language and culture. Students who do not have an 80-group in Chinese may also apply on condition that they can document sufficient knowledge of Chinese and that they have a BA degree with in-depth specialisation in relevant subjects within linguistics or literature.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course assumes basic Chinese language skills corresponding to KIN2110 and a basic acquaintance with Chinese literature corresponding to KIN1300. The course is a continuation of MA Chinese Studies; KIN4012 - Language/Literature 1, however this course is not a prerequisite.
Teaching
Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars and requires active participation and the handing in of compulsory assignments. Teaching takes place throughout the semester.
Examination
The course evaluation is portfolio assessment. The portfolio consists of two parts, one written and one oral. The written paper consists of an essay of approx. 10 pages (23000 characters) on a subject approved by the teacher. The essay should include analysis and consideration of a subject based on primary and secondary source readings. The oral consists of an oral presentation and participation during teaching. Students must obtain passing grades in both the oral and the written part to pass the course.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
