Course content
The course is constructed around one or more anthropological or sociological theme(s) and encompasses the reading and analysis of selected Chinese works on China as well as discussions about theory and method. In addition central non-Chinese sources will be consulted.
Learning outcome
The student will acquire basic insight into the development of the disciplines anthropology and sociology in a Chinese context based on Chinese sources. The student will also be trained in how to read and relate to anthropological/sociological data and reference literature. The student will acquire an understanding of the special methodological challenges facing anthropology/sociology in China. In addition the choice of theme will acquaint the student especially well with certain aspects of anthropological/sociological research in China. Further, the student will learn to prepare summaries of the argumentation in academic texts.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
An 80-group in Chinese language at BA level with a grade of at least C in Chinese 3+4 (KIN2110), alternatively Chinese major subject with a mark of at least 2.7. Students from other educational institutions may apply provided that they have attained a BA degree or equivalent with the main weight on Chinese language and culture. Students who do not have an 80-group in Chinese may also apply on condition that they can document sufficient knowledge of Chinese and that they have a BA degree with in-depth specialisation in anthropology, sociology or political science.
Recommended previous knowledge
The course assumes basic insight into Chinese history, society and politics corresponding to the courses KIN1501 and KIN1503 in addition to basic Chinese language skills corresponding to KIN2110.
Teaching
Teaching is in the form of seminars and requires active participation and the handing in of compulsory assignments. Teaching takes place throughout the semester.
Examination
The course evaluation is in two parts, one written and one oral. The written paper consists of annotated translation and/or summarising. The oral consists of an oral presentation and participation during teaching. The written part is an essay and should be up to 10 pages, 2300 characters per page, plus bibliography.
The written and the oral part each carry 50% of the final grade.
Students must obtain passing grades in both the oral and the written part to pass the course.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
Other
The course forms 1/6 of the requirement for the MA degree in Chinese studies and may also be incorporated into other MA programmes.
This course may not be incorporated into Chinese Main Subject under the old system.
