JAP4091 – Japanese Master’s Degree thesis – Language programme
Course content
The thesis is to comprise 70 to 100 pages and is to be an individual research work. The subject and research topic for the thesis may be chosen from a wide range of topics associated with Japanese language and are chosen in consultation with the supervisor. The thesis is written in English or Norwegian, alternatively another Scandinavian language.
Learning outcome
By working with the thesis the student is to gain insight into the subject chosen. The student learns to gather relevant material into an individual work and adapt this in a methodological way in accordance with relevant theories. Work on the thesis trains the student to formulate a reasoned presentation of the results and to utilise and publicise theoretical knowledge.
Admission

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Admission to the MA degree programme in Japanese and passing grades in all the initial courses of this subject area.
Recommended previous knowledge
Passing grades must have been obtained in the 6 initial courses of 10 credits each which form part of the MA degree programme in Japanese language.
Teaching
Academic supervision of the Master’s degree thesis is compulsory. Up to 15 hours of individual supervision for a 60-credit thesis and up to 7.5 hours for a 30-credit thesis will be given. Supervisors will be assigned by the department. Supervision commences when the Agreement of supervision is signed, and follows these guidelines
Each discipline will organise colloquia for the students. This will be a forum for the students to present and discuss drafts for chapters, project sketches, interview guides etc. The colloquia will be lead by members of the academic staff.
Examination
The MA thesis is to be handed in by a set deadline
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
