The development of Japanese script

• Review Frellesvig, A history of the Japanese language, chapters 1 (¡®Writing and sources¡¯) and 6 (¡®Writing and sources¡¯)
• Review Miller, The Japanese Language, chapter 3, 'Writing systems'.
• Seeley 1991.

This lecture will give a survey of the development of Japanese script. We will look at the earliest type of writing, where only 'kanji', Chinese characters, were used, and then trace the development of the hiragana and katakana scripts and the way in which they were used. In the course of the lecture there will be exercises in small groups, in order for everybody to get some 'hands-on' experience with earlier types of writing.
