There is no set syllabus or required reading for this course, but the following is a basic bibliographic orientation on East Asian linguistics:

Three languages are central to our course: Japanese, Korean and Chinese.

These are conveniently discussed in the handbook for general linguists:

  • Bernard Comrie, The Major Languages of East and South-east Asia(Paperback) London: Routledge 1990UHS, Mag315, ?st C 40 Maj

For sociolinguistic aspects of the modern languages see:

  • Cliff Goddard, The Languages of East and Southeast Asia, 2005NOT IN UB, but the lecturer has a copy.

For Japanese, the language family context is controversial and the language may be studied without reference to the language family to which it may or may not belong:

  • Shibatani, Masayoshi. (1990). The languages of Japan.Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. ISBN 0-521-36070-6 (hbk); ISBN 0-521-36918-5 (pbk). UHS, Mes, ?ST Eb 60 Shi One may also want to look at the following two books:

  • Tsujimura, Natsuko. (2007). An introduction to Japanese linguistics. Cambridge, MA: Blackwell Publishers. ISBN 0-631-19855-5 (hbk); ISBN 0-631-19856-3 (pbk). UHS, Mes, ?ST Eb 60
  • Tsu Tsujimura, Natsuko. (Ed.) (1999). The handbook of Japaneselinguistics. Malden, MA: Blackwell Publishers. ISBN 0-631-20504-7. NETLIBRARY:http://www.netlibrary.com/Details.aspx

Again, Korean is so problematic in the context of language family classification that the language is sometimes sheepishly called a language isolate. The convenient survey remains:

  • Sohn, H.-M. (1999). The Korean Language. Cambridge: CambridgeUniversity Press. UHS, Mes, ?ST Jb Soh

For Chinese it is important to know something about the Sino-Tibetan language family context, and on this you may usefully consult:

  • Thurgood, Graham and Randy John LaPolla. 2003. The Sino-Tibetanlanguages. London: Routledge, 2003 UHS, Mes, ORIE 495 Thu
For an area-orientated intensely readable survey one should peruse:

  • S. Robert Ramsey, The languages of China. Princeton University Press, 1987 UHS, Mes, ?ST Db 10 Ram
