EAL4020 – Topics in the History of East Asian Languages

Course content

The course focuses on one or more given topics within East Asian linguistics, which are discussed on the basis of concrete textual examples from Chinese, Korean and Japanese.

The topics will have a historical dimension and may include

  • grammar (syntax, morphology and phonology)
  • conceptual history
  • reading traditions of Classical Chinese in China, Korea and Japan
  • the influence of Classical Chinese on Modern Chinese, Japanese and Korean

Learning outcome

  • You will be trained in the analysis of specific problems relating to the history of East Asian languages, based on textual examples from one or more of these languages.

Recommended previous knowledge

EAL4010 - East Asian Linguistics

The course presupposes a knowledge of general linguistics corresponding to Halvor Eifring and Rolf Theil: Linguistics for students of Asian and African languages.

Teaching

Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars (12 classes of 2 hours each). The course requires active participation in class. As part of the course, the students shall also make an oral presentation in class.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

The exam is a term paper of approx. 10 pages, in which the student analyses a specific topic related to the language of specialisation on the basis of his or her theoretical training.

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
