LAT4303 – Late Antique and Medieval Latin Prose and Poetry

Course content

We read approximately 100 pages (depending on the difficulty of the texts) of Latin prose and poetry from ca. 400-1400 AD. Different genres are represented, for example Christian hymns, epic poetry, historiography, biography and letters. Additionally, we will examine and discuss secondary literature relevant to the texts under study.

Learning outcome

After this course, you will be able to:

  • independently read and translate the selected Latin texts into Norwegian and/or English and interpret them.
  • have full command of the central vocabulary in the texts.
  • discuss linguistic and stylistic aspects of the texts.
  • present the development from classical metric poetry to rhythmic poetry.
  • present Christianity`s contribution to the development of language, style and content in Latin texts from the period 400-1400 AD.
  • discuss the use of classical genres (e.g. epic poetry, historiography, biography, letters) during the late-antique and medieval period.
  • discuss how new genres (e.g. hymns, sermons) emerged/developed during the period.

To be admitted to this course, you must be enrolled in Classical Studies (master). Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Specialization (80 ECTS credits) in Latin at the Bachelor's level.

Teaching

14 two-hour seminars.

We expect you to prepare for the seminars.

NB: If no more than two students sign up for the course, the teaching may be given as guided reading.?

In order for you to be allowed to sit for the final examination,?the following compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher:

Approved compulsory tuition activity is only valid the semester it finds place, as the activity is directly connected to the exam.

Examination

Seminar paper of a total of 10-15 pages, 2300 characters each (without spaces; title page and reference list not included).

In order for you to be allowed to submit the final essay, all compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher.

Examination support material

You are required to?familiarize yourself with the rules for sources and citations. It may be considered cheating or attempted cheating to use other people's material without informing about it.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
