LAT2403 ¨C Roman Historiographers

Course content

We read 40-60 pages from Roman historiographers, depending on the difficulty of the texts. In addition you will be expected to read supplementary literature for in-depth study and/or orientation.

Learning outcome

After you have completed the course, you will be able to:

• independently translate the course texts into Norwegian and/or English and interpret them.
• discuss the evolution of historiography and give examples of the genre's distinctive features and evolution.
• identify and explain the linguistic features that are typical of the author(s) of the Latin texts, and understand how these characterize the text.?
• Analyse the texts' features in relation to their historical, literary and/or cultural aspects.
• discuss aspects of Latin grammar based on the selected texts.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

• LAT1001 ¨C Innf?ring i latin I eller LAT4001 ¨C Innf?ring i latin I for masterstudenter
• LAT1002 ¨C Innf?ring i latin II eller LAT4002 ¨C Innf?ring i latin II for masterstudenter

(or equivalent knowledge - contact the department if you have studied Latin elsewhere)

Teaching

14 two-hours seminars.

We expect you to prepare for the seminars and to participate actively.

In order for you to be allowed to submit the final seminar paper, the following compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher:

• Draft of the seminar paper. You submit your draft in Canvas.

Approved tuition activity is valid only in the semester in which it has been approved.

Examination

Seminar paper of a total of ca. 10 pages, 2300 characters each (without spaces; title page and reference list not included).

When you write a seminar paper, you are entitled to receive individual tutoring. The obligatory draft of the semester paper forms the basis for this tutoring. An exact deadline for handing in the draft will be given by the teacher during the seminar.

In order for you to qualify for the final examination, all compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher.

Examination support material

You are required to familiarize yourself with the rules for sources and citations. It may be considered cheating or attempted cheating to use other people's material without informing about it.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail.?Read more about the grading system.
