In this course, we will focus on the genre of the Neo-Latin epigram which enjoyed particular popularity during the early modern period. We will zoom in on the work of Manilio Cabacio Rallo (c. 1447–c. 1523): a refugee from Byzantium who became an accomplished Latin poet in Rome. His collection of epigrams covers a wide range of topics, including his own displacement, love, famous contemporaries, and the troubled political situation of Europe and his fatherland Greece. Students will work with various manuscripts and old prints and will be introduced to some basic editorial techniques. All materials will be made available to the students via Canvas.
