LAT1403 – Latin Lyric Poetical Texts

Course content
We read lyrical poems by Catullus and Horats (a total of 600-750 verses).
Learning outcome
Having completed this course, you will be able to:
- translate the syllabus text(s) into Norwegian and interpret them
- master the central vocabulary of the text(s)
- Understand the text(s) within a historical and cultural framework
- explain the poems` verses and read the poems out loud based on this analysis
Admission to the course

Formal prerequisite knowledge
- LAT1001 – Innf?ring i latin I or LAT4001 – Innf?ring i latin I for masterstudenter
- LAT1002 – Innf?ring i latin II
(Or equivalent education - please contact the student advisor if you need an evaluation of your previous education in Latin)
Overlapping courses
- 5 credits overlap with LAT1305 – Latin tekstemne grunniv?: Catull og Horats (discontinued).
- 5 credits overlap with LAT2412 – Latin Lyrical Poetry.
Teaching
- 7 two hour seminars
- 5 two hour lessons in metrics
The teaching method requires active participation and we expect you to meet prepared for the seminars. In order for you to be able to present yourself for the exam, you must have completed and had approved the following compulsory tuition activity:
- qualifying mid-term test

Approved compulsory tuition activity is also valid the next two times the course is offered.
Examination
Written examination (4 hours).
School examinations/written examinations are carried out in the digital examination system Inspera. You must familiarize yourself with the implementation of the digital exam in Inspera. Read more about digital school exams.
Compulsory tuition activity must be approved in order for you to be able to sit for the exam.
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
