KUN4202 – Nordic Design after 1900
Course description
Course content
The course explores the unique Nordic design tradition from c. 1900 until today. Working from a broadened definition of the concept of Scandinavian Design, the course offers new perspectives on both "classics" and less well-known aspects of our design culture.
The teaching is structured around a series of themes of particular relevance to the history of Nordic design.
Learning outcome
Upon completion of this course the student will be expected to be able to:
- Relate key aspects of Nordic design history.
- Apply design historical perspectives to our modern material cultural Heritage.
- Analyse a broad array of artifacts in a design historical context.
Admission to the course
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
Students enrolled in other Master`s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Teaching
This course will be taught in 2 hour sessions, in total 28 hours (circa). The sessions are taught in a combination of lectures and seminars. Parts of the teaching may take place in museums. It is expected that you are active in class discussions.
When writing a semester essay you are entitled to individual guidance by you teacher. To be eligible for this guidance you must submit a draft of your paper that meets certain requirements. More detailed information about guidance and how to submit your draft will be given by the teacher during class or in Canvas.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
A term paper of 6-7,5 pages (à 2300 characters without spaces, not including illustrations and notes) and a two hour written examination.
The exams will be assessed as a whole and you will be given one final grade.

Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed on the school exam.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
