GRE4307 – Ancient Medical Texts

Schedule, syllabus and examination date

Course content

We read select medical texts from Antiquity, covering medical theory and/or practice, from Hippocrates (5. century BC) to Oribasius (4. century AD), approximately 100 pages* in total. The historical and intellectual background of ancient medicine will also be treated when necessary.

* 1 page = 1 page in Teubner / Oxford Classical Texts.

Learning outcome

Having completed this course, you will be able to:

  • translate the course texts
  • identify the technical vocabulary used by ancient medical writers
  • discuss the transmission of the course texts
  • explain the intellectual background of the course texts and relate them to intellectual debates either within the medical community or more broadly in ancient thought

Admission to the course

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Bachelor`s degree with specialization in Ancient Greek, or similar education.

Teaching

14 double sessions of seminars. Seminars require that students participate actively. We expect you to prepare for the seminars.

In order for you to be allowed to submit the final essay, the following compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher:

  • draft of the semester essay

Examination

Semester essay, 8-10 pages of 2300 characters each.

When you write a semester essay, you are entitled to receive individual tutoring. The obligatory draft of the semester paper forms the basis for this tutoring. An exact deadline for handing in the draft will be given by the teacher during the seminar.

In order for you to be allowed to submit the final essay, the compulsory tuition activity must be approved by the teacher.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
