GRE4101 ¨C Greek Grammar III

Course content

The course focuses on translation of continuous passages of increasing length and difficulties from Norwegian into Ancient Greek. The vocabulary and stilistic ideals of central writers of Classical Athens such as Xenophon and Plato are taken as the starting point. The grammatical resources employed by Greek authors in order to make their texts coherent, especially word order and particles, are a main focus of the course.

Learning outcome

When you have completed this course, you are able to:

• translate continuous passages from Norwegian into Ancient Greek.
• find idiomatic and natural expressions in Classical Attic Greek.
• apply the principles underlying Greek word order and particle use to continuous passages.

Admission to the course

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

You must be admitted to Classical Studies (master`s two years) to sign up for this course. Students enrolled in other Master`s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

At least 60 ECTS credits in Ancient Greek.

Recommended previous knowledge

We expect you to have knowledge of grammar equivalent to GRE2105 ¨C Gresk grammatikk II (discontinued).

Overlapping courses

• 5 credits overlap with GRE4104 ¨C Oversettelse til gresk (discontinued).

Teaching

10 double sessions of seminars.

You are expected to be prepared and to be an active participant in the seminars. You are also expected to submit weekly written assignments.

In order for you to be allowed to sit for the final examination, the following compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher:

• you must submit drafts of the three assignments that will be included in the portfolio.
• attendance: you must attend at least 7 of the 10 seminars.

Examination

A portfolio consisting of edited forms of three assignments that you have been working on during the semester. The assignments must take into consideration the discussions during the seminars, problematize the most important syntactic and stylistic features of the text and refer to relevant grammar handbooks and/or secondary literature.

In order for you to sit for the examination, all compulsory activities must be approved.

Language of examination

You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
