GRE2404 – Greek Historiographers

Course content
We read excerpts (60-75 pages of Ancient Greek text*) of one or more Greek historiographers (Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon or later historians) and interpret them in a historical perspective. In addition we read secondary literature for orientation and/or in-depth study of research debates concerning various aspects of the Greek texts (e.g. their value as historical sources, their relation to other sources such as other texts or archaeological finds, their reception and afterlife)
1 page = 1 page in a Teubner or Oxford Classical Texts edition.
Learning outcome
After completing this course, you will be able to:
- independently read and translate the selected Greek texts into Norwegian and/or English and interpret them.
- discuss the development of the genre and provide examples of its distinctive features.
- identify and analyse the distinctive stylistic features of the author(s) of the Greek texts and elucidate their role in shaping the texts.
- interpret the texts considering relevant historical, literary-historical, literary, and/or cultural aspects .
- discuss aspects of Greek grammar based on the selected texts.

- GRE1001 – Innf?ring i gresk I or GRE4001 – Innf?ring i gresk I for masterstudenter
- GRE1002 – Innf?ring i gresk II or GRE4002 – Innf?ring i gresk II for masterstudenter
(or equivalent knowledge - contact the department if you have studied Latin elsewhere)
Teaching
14 two-hour seminars.?
Autumn 2024 the teaching is common with GRE4317 – Greek Prose I.
We expect you to participate actively in the seminars through:
- weekly preparations of Ancient Greek text (translations)
- reading of secondary literature
- regular oral contribution; participation in the seminars, reading out loud the assigned Ancient Greek text and translating it into English.?
In order for you to be allowed to sit for the final examination,?the following compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher:
- Oral presentation
- Attendance: You must attend at least 10 of the 14 seminars.
Approved tuition activity is valid also for the next two semesters in which the course is offered.
Examination
Written examination (4 hours).
Written examinations are carried out in the digital examination system Inspera. You must familiarize yourself with the digital examination arrangements in Inspera before your written exam.?Read more about digital school exams.
In order for you to qualify for the final examination, all compulsory tuition activities must be approved by the teacher.
Examination support material
No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. If you would prefer to have the exam text in English, you may apply to the course administrators.
